A network of newsrooms

What a great idea. I stumbled upon Publishing 2.0′s post about creating a network of newsrooms, journalist, bloggers and others to cover the “Super Tuesday” primary elections on Feb. 5.

Again, what a great idea. Collaborative projects like this seem to be popping up more and more and I think will have more relevance as the industry evolves.

There’s a huge opportunity to help voters find the best election coverage in the sea of election content. Yeah, you can do it by yourself — but on the web, the larger the network, the more influential the linking — time to break down those traditional media silos.

This brings up again an often unpopular idea I have been throwing around. Why do newspapers need AP content to cover statewide news?

Why couldn’t each newspaper in a state decide on its own to share an RSS feed of news, opinion and local bloggers, which would virtually do away with the state wire feed from AP and likely make the information more relevant.

Does AP do more than add weight to credibility?
